The Tembembe Center of Afromexican Studies had the first annual meet. It took place from 30th march to 2nd april 2023. The meet was to establish the plan to organize future projects that will be done by 2023. Therefore, the meet was a space of recognition where we each member of The Tembembe Center had close contact. From the pandemic, We were working in a distance and virtual spaces such as Meeting and Zoom, and it meant the first time to know in person. The meet was exciting, despite some of us knowing each other, having a good feeling, having a great connection and also having common projects, because of the pandemic we didn't have the time to keep a conversation face to face.
Some of the final agreements of this meet were:
- Palenque of Formation for Afromexican Teachers: Carry out mensual inner sessions to train us in specialization themes of each of us, with this, we want to have a deep knowledge and understanding to reach clearly for future projects
- Black Pedagogical Approaches: Conservatories, workshops and lectures around black pedagogies at UNAM
- Workshops, lectures and activities to call to action to afromexican children and youths.
- Enable Social Networks and digital media with the activities from The Tembembe Center with commemorative dates for afro activism.
- The most urgent projects were discussed, as the “Dialogues of afromexican children and youths' in The Chamber of Deputies.
Also we did an activity where we could express our feelings of being afromexican and afrodescendant persons, but from our childhood memories. In this exercise, we draw ourselves in that time of our life, and narrate some experience or experiences that left us an imprint, and still without understanding what was going on, right now we are able to know that we were living racism. Speak and share with persons who also lived similar things helped to health and redefine our experiences
Was a wonderful weekend, we were able to reach an agreement to do the future projects that will be done this year, know team priorities, and of course, we enjoyed a funny time to meet us better.
